Epoch 3: so, what is an epoch?
In the Ethereum BlockChain, an Epoch is a set of 30000 consecutive blocks.
As maybe you already know, the blockchain is formed by concatenated blocks.
The more the time passes, the more blocks are created. So when the 3millionth block was reached, the epoch100 started.
Remember that the first epoch is EPOCH 0, containing the first block, the GENESIS BLOCK.
The earthbeat of the blockchain
"In the beginning" the duration of the blocks was of 12 seconds. The difficulty in mining new blocks increases, to mantain this value as constant as possible.
So an epoch duration was 12s * 30000 = 360000s = 100h, 100 hours.
At the moment we are writing, however, the block creation is slower, with an average value of 22.6 seconds per block.
This means that also the epochs are now longer than 100 hours.
