Epoch 15: Geth: Manage accounts
The account command followed by options lets you:
- new: create new accounts
- list: list all the accounts
- import: import accounts by private key
- update: change password
You can set the password in interactive and non-interactive way. We will see interactive way, because it's more safe; in the other case you need to have a file with the password.
Create a new account
Geth will ask for a password and then create a file in the keystore, containing your private password.
NEVER FORGET YOUR PASSWORD
NEVER LOOSE YOUR PRIVATE KEY FILE
If you forgot your pass or you have lost your private key, it's NOT POSSIBLE to access to your account anymore.
DON'T GIVE THESE DATA TO ANYONE
A lot of scammers create fake online wallets where they ask you to insert these data.
Never do that! If you want to try an online wallet, be sure it's not a scam, then create a new key for this service, with zero balance.
List existing accounts
This is a very useful command:
It lets you see all the accounts manageable by geth (you need to unlock them before using them, we will see how).
It gives also the key file position.
Update an account
Do you remember that an account has an address? (
To update an account you need to specify the address you want to update. This account must be in your account list.
This command lets you update the password.
Import an accont
To import an account you need to specify where the private key is stored, this way:
If the keyfile is already encrypted, geth will prompt for the password. If it's not encrypted, it will ask to set a password.
